According to the drive theory of motivation, deviations from homeostasis create physiological needs. In sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) an infant stops breathing during sleep and dies. As early chemists worked to purify ores and discovered more elements, they realized that various elements could be grouped together by their similar chemical behaviors.
